Description:
On December 10, 2020 at around 8:30PM
I hiked about 1/2 mile along a dark trail bordering Cutler Pond in
Needham, using a flashlight to lead the way, until I found a clearing
that faced East along the Charles River. It was around 30 degrees
F but a nice, clear evening. I set up my tripod
and an old Canon 50D that I modded myself to remove the IR filter (full
spectrum mod as described here),
along with a clip-in Astronomik CLS-CCD filter and my Canon 10-22mm
wideangle lens set to 12mm focal length. After focusing using
live view, I set up the camera to point east along the Charles River,
hoping to catch Orion rising. I proceeded to take 44 shots in
sequence (using an intervalometer), each 20 seconds in duration (to
avoid star trailing), and then
packed up and hiked back home. The total exposure time was only
about 15 minutes, but I was able to capture some nice Ha emission,
including Barnard's Loop, M42, a faint wiff of the Horsehead, the
Rosette, and Orion's Head. It's all there- just look for it
:). At first I was unhappy that I could only set
the tripod behind the trees, but in retrospect, I like how it looks-
the foreground branches give the photograph a nice perspective.
