Description:
NGC 7380 is a young star cluster born within the emission nebula SH2-142, in the constellation Cepheus.  The shape of this region when presented vertically resembles a wizard with some imagination, but I preferred to orient it more horizonally as shown above.  Like many star forming regions, the active young stars emit UV radiation, which exites hydrogen atoms to emit in the H alpha range (656nm, red), H beta (486 nm, blue), and is also energetic enough to exite oxygen atoms (OIII, 496nm and 501nm, blue-green).  The central part of the nebula shows cleared out gas that is emitting more H beta and OIII relative to H alpha, giving it a bluish appearance even in this HaRGB image (taken without an OIII filter).  Columns of gas are being sculpted by UV winds from the hot, newly formed stars, demonstrating a variety of "elephant trunk" shapes typical of other similar star forming regions such as IC 1396 and the Rosette Nebula.  More information about NGC 7380 may be found in Rob Gendler's website.
